About PCGIS

Geographic information displayed on maps is essential for most aspects of physical and socio-economic planning. In Zambia however, maps and plans have not been easily available at District and even Province Level.

To change this, the PCGIS was founded in 2005 as a network of public stakeholders with a strong interest in up-to-date spatial data. It offers all services related to mapping: from training in data collection with a hand-held GPS and procurement of satellite imagery to the production of up-to-date maps.

Thus, the PCGIS facilitates the sharing and use of geographic information in spatial planning and decision making. In addition to public sector clients, it also targets the private sector and NGOs.

The centre is supported through the SDI programme (Support to Decentralisation Implementation) and is located at the Provincial Office of the Zambia Survey Department in Livingstone, Southern Province.
