Eastern Province embraces GIS
From the 9th to the 13th of May, 2011 four members of staff from Petauke district council and one staff from the Department of Physical Planning and Housing in Eastern Province were at the Provincial Centre for Geographic Information Services where they received training in GIS using the latest ESRI ArcGIS Desktop software ArcGIS10. They also received training in the use of a hand held GPS device. Among the participants were the Petauke district Planning Officer and the Water Engineer.

Second GIS Workshop
The workshop was held to establish a network of GIS users and to overcome the challenges faced in the country and indeed to share lessons learnt and eventually find the way forward. This workshop was attended by over sixty GIS practitioners and managers from across the country from both the public and private sectors. There were also two representatives from ESRI South Africa. The workshop was officially opened by Mr. Mubanja the Surveyor General. In his opening remarks Mr. Mubanja reiterated the significance of GIS in improving service delivery in the country. The 2nd GIS practitioner workshop was also held at the Survey Department Headquarters in Lusaka on the 26th to the 27th of January, 2011.

Department of Physical Planning and Housing receives GIS training
To avert the status quo the Ministry of Local Government and Housing (MLGH) through the Department of Physical Planning and Housing (DPPH) in Lusaka decided to send planners in two groups of four to the Provincial Centre for Geographic Information Service (PCGIS) in Livingstone for basic Geographic Information Systems (GIS) training.

PCGIS supports Siavonga IDP
Over the past years, the urban infrastructure of Zambia has deteriorated to such an extent that it is having negative effect on service users.
There has been a general decline in service quality, and a severe lack of access to basic urban services.

PCGIS supports National Heritage Conservation Commission in World Heritage Site application
The Provincial Centre For Geographic Information Services (PCGIS) was requested to do a project for the National Heritage Conservation Commission (NHCC). The map will be part of the application to make the Barotse Flood Plain a world Heritage Site of the UNESCO.

Promoting Afrikatourism routes from Cape to Cairo and the role of GIS
PCGIS has over the years gained recognition not only nationally but internationally as well especially in the SADC region, due to its efficient service delivery to both the public and private sector. From the 12th to the 23rd of October 2009 the Centre administered GIS training to one of the Community Development Experts for OpenAfrica an organization whose administrative offices are in Cape Town, South Africa.

Example of GIS analysis in the prevention of HIV/AIDS
PCGIS has just completed a project with AWISA (AIDS Workplace Programmes in Southern Africa) showing surrounding communities that might be affected by HIV/AIDS due to the upgrading of feeder roads (see also portfolio).

Mazabuka Municipal Council Training
Proper planning is one of the most important things to ensure that the right decisions are made in Zambia. With this realization some staff from Mazabuka Municipal Council were at PCGIS where they received training in GIS from the 27th to the 28th of July, 2009 to enable them to analyze spatial data and adequately plan for the town of Mazabuka which is growing hastily.
