Promoting Afrikatourism routes from Cape to Cairo and the role of GIS

OpenAfrica, a non-profit organization with Nelson Mandela as its patron, has systematized the development and marketing of tourism across Africa, in the first ever Pan- continental project. So far OpenAfrica has facilitated community-based routes in South Africa, Lesotho, Swaziland, Namibia, Mozambique and most recently Zambia.
From the 12th to the 23rd of October, 2009 PCGIS participated in the endeavour of “joining the splendour of Africa in a network of tourism routes from the Cape to Cairo, focusing on the the magnificence of this continent’s cultural and natural assets” through the training of one of the Community Development Experts of OpenAfrica in Geographic Information Systems (GIS). It is envisaged that GIS technology will help in mapmaking and in conserving the environment.
The first week was characterized by serious training where as during the second week, the OpenAfrica officer joined the PCGIS team in working on existing projects.
